How to Fix a Leaky Showerhead and Essential Maintenance Tips for Longevity

Handling a Leaky Showerhead and Maintenance

After a showerhead is in use for a period of time, eventually, it may clog or have leaks which will need to be addressed sooner than later to avoid affecting our quality of life. Thereby, what do I do if the showerhead leaks? What about maintenance? Below is what to do.

I. What if the showerhead is leaking?

  • If the leak is at the connection point of your showerhead, simply screw off the handle and screw it back on. If it is still leaking, add plumber’s tape around the threaded area and screw it back on.
  • If the leak is from water leaking from a diverter ball and your shower is leaking because of it, then you will need to disassemble the diverter head, which has an o-ring ball that you will need to remove and replace with a new one.

II. How to maintain the showerhead.

  1. Cleaning

After a showerhead has been in use sometime, we want to eventually take it off and clean it, to avoid any accumulation from hard water that will cause a clog and can affect use. Since water quality differs from region to region, users in areas with harder water will accumulate deposits more so than users in other areas; thus users must make the decision for cleanup based on local water conditions. Lastly, do not clean a showerhead with strong acids or bases.

2.Surface Maintenance

After every use, it is necessary to clean the surface of the showerhead and dry it with a clean cloth to prevent water droplet residue build-up. Over time, water droplet residue will harden and create water stains that will appear unsightly and destroy the shine of the showerhead. Beyond using a good cleaning agent for regular cleaning, a neutral cleaner works well on the surface of the showerhead to maintain the shine.

  1. Temperature of Use

If installed correctly, a showerhead should handle hot and cold water. However, when using hot water, you need to control the temperature of the water heater. If you will not be using the showerhead for long periods, do not let the water get hotter than 70 degrees Celsius; otherwise, it could affect the durability of the showerhead (with prolonged use). Conversely, it would also be best to set the water heater at a moderate temperature so you will use less energy.

In conclusion, we have explained what to do when a showerhead leaks and showerhead maintenance. Since showerheads are used often, they require constant maintenance to avoid disruption in your daily living. We hope we have helped you to either replace or fix any leak issues.
